A Message from the Chancellor

Talk with me about your hopes and dreams for Appalachian.

When I became the sixth Chancellor of Appalachian State University in 2004, I spoke with many of you about my hopes and dreams for our university and what I wanted to accomplish in my first years as Chancellor. The dialogue I enjoyed with our students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends was invaluable to me as I prioritized and refined my early goals.

Now, as we approach the time to begin a significant comprehensive campaign for Appalachian, which will dramatically influence the direction of the institution both now and for the next generation of Mountaineers, it is very important for me to hear and understand your hopes and dreams for the future of Appalachian. What do we wish to accomplish with the resources available to us? Which areas of research do we emphasize in order to achieve a national presence? What strategies will enable Appalachian to fully play its role in supporting the current and future needs of the people of North Carolina, the United States and the world? What do we wish our identity to be in the world of higher education? How can we continue to elevate the academic quality of the students who attend Appalachian? What resources do we need to provide the best possible learning experience for our most precious resource, our students?

These are only a few of the questions that we must answer together. They represent the challenge of our future and the opportunities that are uniquely Appalachians to seize.

I invite you to join our dialogue by completing the survey. We will be asking for input in the months ahead through a variety of communications channels, but I did not want to miss the opportunity to hear from you as we begin this conversation today. We will be compiling the information and feedback received and will distribute a report to all of you who shared your ideas and thoughts summarizing what we have heard.

Thank you for all you do for Appalachian and for participating in a process that will prepare us to reach greater heights for our students and all whose lives are touched or will be touched by Appalachian State University.
